本展では、戦後の代表作をはじめ、さらに学生時代の同級生である下村良之介や、1930年代に新進気鋭の画家として活躍していた田口壯（たぐち さかん）ら先輩の作品も紹介し、戦中、戦後を生きた堂本元次の画歴を振り返ります。

Domoto Mototsugu (1923-2010) was born in Kyoto. In 1941, he entered Kyoto City Technical School of Painting (present Kyoto City University of Arts) with the intention of becoming a Japanese-style painter. He was graduate early two years then went to the war (World War II). After the war, he began his career as a painter and challenged to work in various art genres under the influence of Domoto Insho. It was in 1979 that a turning point came to his painting style when he visited China for the first time. He was fascinated by the rustic scenery of China, and since then he has been presenting works based on the research there.
In this exhibition, we look back at his painting career, who lived during and after the war, introducing representative works from the postwar period.
